This week’s post is on what I think is a very exciting release from French Electro producer Kavinsky. “Protovision” is a preview track from his upcoming 2013 album “Outrun”. What I find so exciting is that prior to September last year, Kavinsky wasn’t really that popular (at least in the UK and USA). His last substantial EP was released back in 2007, but he suddenly rose to mainstream attention after his 2010 single “Nightcall” featuring CSS’ Lovefoxxx was featured in the 2011 motion picture “Drive”. As it happens, Kavinksy’s 1980’s style Electro-pop sound fit the style and tone of “Drive” perfectly. And here we are a year later, the single having reached just under 26,500,000 views on YouTube, clear evidence of the potential for exposure through the film industry.
At the risk of sounding like a full on hipster, I won’t say I was a huge fan of Kavinsky before “Drive”, however I did discover him via a remix of his track “Testarossa Autodrive” by the producer and DJ SebastiAn. What I honestly did think though, was that Kavinsky wasn’t actually active anymore. He’d already toured for a while with Daft Punk and Justice in 2007, but nothing new seemed to be coming from him following the “Nightcall” EP. I was clearly quite wrong.
Kavinsky has obviously been spurred on by the success of the “Nightcall” EP to continue (or hasten) his producing. “Protovision” could have honestly been taken straight from his 2007 “1986” EP, but there’s much more depth to his sound now. The bass is deeper, there is the addition of high pitched electric guitar notes, the synths are more refined and less like the ones found in the Knight Rider theme tune. “Outrun” is looking very promising and I can hardly wait for its release.
